Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Services

Talk Therapy

We offer individual, couples, and family therapy sessions for adolescents, and adults.

We offer a free phone consultation to ensure that our services will be a good fit for your needs.

*During Covid-19 we are continuing to offer telehealth sessions via a HIPPA compliant version of Zoom.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are a result of disturbing life experiences. Eye movements (or other bilateral stimulation) are used to reprocess psychological traumatic events or memories. Unlike talk therapy, the insights clients gain in EMDR therapy result not so much from clinical interpretation, but from the client's own accelerated intellectual and emotional processes. In successful EMDR therapy, the meaning of painful events is transformed on an emotional level.

"I initially entered my EMDR sessions with a skeptical but open mind. It was hard for me to believe the process would actually result in any positive outcome, but I had read about it's effectiveness in helping patients with PTSD and unresolved trauma, so I felt I should at least try to be open and see if it could help. My hope was that it might lessen the impact of my past trauma on my daily life and provide me the tools I needed to cope with the effects this trauma had on my life. In fact, EMDR far exceeded those early expectations. Today, I feel sincerely free of the impact the trauma had had on my daily life. Not only is it no longer front of mind, it is simply not there. I can return to these moments without feeling any of the harmful emotions or negative ideations that had previously consumed me. I now feel a much stronger self confidence and a far more secure sense of self. The treatment has changed my life, and I am so grateful that I took the chance to be open to the process." -Anonymous client

Hypnosis

Clinical hypnosis is a process in which a licensed health professional suggests that a client/patient experience changes in sensations, perceptions, thoughts, or behavior. The hypnotic context is generally established by a direct or indirect induction procedure. Well trained professionals determine which approach will be most useful for the person in front of them. Invitations to let go of stress/tension and suggestions to imagine or think about pleasant experiences are commonly included in hypnotic inductions. People respond to hypnosis in different ways. Some describe their experience as an altered state of consciousness, but others describe hypnosis as a normal state of focused attention, in which they feel very calm and relaxed. Regardless of how and to what degree they respond, most people describe the experience as very pleasant. Some people are very responsive to hypnotic suggestions and others are less responsive. Hypnosis makes it easier for people to experience suggestions, but it does not force them to do anything.

Imago Couples Therapy

Imago couples therapy sessions are a type of couples therapy unlike many others. Rather than telling clients how to solve their issues, my role as facilitator is to assist couples in learning a new language in which they will learn how to truly listen to one another. Using mirroring, validating, and empathizing, couples will learn how to engage in conversations to foster meaning and growth.  This dialogue will deepen their ability to understand one another's perspective, and the skills they will learn during these sessions will improve their communication and connection, bridging the gap between the space between them.

Psychodrama

The word "Psychodrama" comes from the Greek word "psyche" meaning mind and "drama" meaning action. Psychodrama can be understood as the exploration of the mind through action. This creative art therapy approach uses skillfully and gently guided action techniques to enact scenes from life in an effort to gain new insight, develop understanding, express unexpressed feelings, and practice new behaviors. The therapist supports clients in creating dramas to help heal from past traumas, relationship issues, and a variety of other life hardships and transitions.
